Patu Kaikohe has been helping locals change their lifestyle.

The Patu initiative has brought workout classes in a whanau atmosphere to Napier, Hastings, Wairoa and now – Kaikohe.

Richie and Jaeme Koroi wanted to bring the kaupapa of Patu Aotearoa to Kaikohe.

Based on a social enterprise model, the gym operates classes Monday to Friday which encourage weight loss and a healthy lifestyle.

“We are more about creating impact on people’s lifestyles than profit,” Richie says.

There are currently 80 registered members who use the gym which is located at Lindvart Park in Kaikohe

The classes have a bi-cultural element with commands made in both te reo and English.

Patu is a weapon used by warriors to attack the enemy and to protect whanau.

The gym concept is based on combatting a new enemy faced by many – obesity and diabetes.

Gym goers pay a small fee to register with ongoing weekly payments which allows them to attend as many sessions as they like throughout the working week.
